Four Hospitalised, 10 Arrested As Hoodlums, Rivers Taskforce Clash

About four persons were injured after suspected thugs attacked officials of the Rivers State Taskforce on Street Trading, Illegal Motor Parks and Markets at the demolished slaughter market in Trans-Amadi-Oginigba, Obio/Apkor Local Government Area of Rivers State on Thursday.

A policeman attached to the team was among the injured victims.

Meanwhile, the police said 10 persons allegedly linked to the attack were arrested at the scene of the incident, saying they would be prosecuted if found culpable at the end of investigation.

Our correspondent gathered that the taskforce’s officials were enforcing the ban on street trading at the demolished slaughter market in Oginigba when the hoodlums started pelting them with stones.

The policemen attached to the taskforce however shot into the air to disperse the hoodlums, and managed to beat a retreat with the officials, before security reinforcement arrived the scene.

The taskforce’s Coordinator, Felix Nwadibe, explained that officials were at the Trans- Amadi area to enforce the ban when the thugs attacked them with guns, machetes, and other weapons.

Nwadibe said, “At about 11am today, I personally led my men to Trans-Amadi, precisely slaughter where a lot of street trading is taking place. The Hausa community, on sighting us, started raining stones at us.
