Gombe United yesterday defeated Rivers United by a lone goal to further put the pressure on last season’s runners up, who are languishing in the bottom rung of the table.The Rivers team, which suspended their technical adviser, Stanley Eguma last week over disciplinary issues, looked out of sorts for most part of the game even when their opponents did not do much to excite the fans.

Idris Bakare got the goal for Gombe United when he rounded Rivers United’s goalkeeper, Abiodun Akande in the 27th minute. That was just after Sani Suleiman’s long-range strike had bounced back off the post with Akande sprawling on the turf.

Rivers improved in the second half and nearly got the equalizer through Nzube Anaezemba, but his effort came back off the post in the 56th minute. The Port Harcourt boys thought they had the leveler in the 84th minute when they had the ball in the net, but the referee ruled it out.

In other matches of the day, Plateau United beat Wikki Tourists 1-0 through Reuben Bala’s well-taken penalty kick in the 57th minute on a day title contenders, MFM were thrashed 4-0 by Nasarawa United and former champions, Kano Pillars lost 0-1 to El Kanemi Warriors, whose goal was scored by Mathias Samuel in the 53rd minute.

Nasarawa United got their goals from Adamu Hassan, Yinka Onaolapo, Oussou and Abdulrahman Bashir.At the U.J Esuene Stadium, Enyimba came from behind to beat defending champions, Enugu Rangers 2-1 with Samuel Chukwude and Skipper Mfon Udoh accounting for the Peoples Elephant’s goals. Former Enyimba star, Daniel Etor had given Rangers the opener in the seventh minute before Chukwude started the home team’s second half revival.

A hat-trick by Alhassan Ibrahim led Akwa United to a 4-2 win over Shooting Stars at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo. Akwa United took the lead in the 11th minute through Friday Ubong before Ibrahim took over the scoring in the 28th, 36th and 44th minutes of the game.

3SC reduced the tally through Moses James and Taiwo Shittu in the 58thn and 90th minute respectively.
Elsewhere, FC IfeanyiUbah defeated Sunshine Stars 2-1, Niger Tornadoes beat Lobi Stars by the same margin, Abia Warriors dismissed ABS 2-0, just as revived Remo Stars outscored Katsina United 1-0.
