Harmans House wins Kings College’s 98th annual inter-house competition

Harmans House at the weekend garnered 48 medals to win Kings College, Lagos’ 98th annual inter-house competition, which took place on the school’s Sports Complex, Lagos Island.

The competition, watched by old boys of the school and dignitaries from across the country, as well as students from other government colleges, featured track and field events, tennis, chess, scrabble, cricket and table tennis.

Harmans medals’ tally included 18 gold, 17 silver and 13 bronze medals, which consigned Panes House (16 gold, 19 silver and 18 bronze medals) to the second position. Hyde Johnson came third, while McWright in the fourth position.

In her speech, the acting Principal of the college, Mrs. Elizabeth Ibezim emphasised the essence of inter-house sports, saying it is a means of assessing the psychomotor domain of education.

She highlighted that sport is part of the developmental process of a child since it goes beyond entertainment but a viable economic tool.

“Exercise has been identified as a therapy for many ailments that torment mankind. Social, economic and health values of sports have been expressed through the annual Kings College inter-house sports. The college has produced the second best student in sport in the whole of Southwest Nigeria. I hereby encourage parents and guardians to support their kids in choosing and participating in any sporting activity,” she said.

The former Principal of the college, Otumba Oladele Okpeju expressed his discomfort on non-availability of sport professionals to scout for fresh talents in the competition. He also expressed his disappointment on the participation of students, saying that students on the bench should be supportive in cheering and encouraging participants.

Among the major highlights of the day were competitions for visually impaired students, parents, teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as kings College Old Boys Association.
