The amendment seeks to impose stiff penalties on offences under the act as well as confer jurisdiction on state high courts to entertain the case.
Before now, the drug administration has been governed by legislations which make provision for punishment that cannot stand as deterrence.
The same legislation precluded the state high courts from entertaining cases of drug abuse.
These are what the lawmakers are trying to correct in the amendment, which makes provision for stiffer penalties and also confer jurisdiction on the state high court.

The amendment increases the fine to be paid by any person convicted of an offence under the act from fifty thousand naira to five hundred thousand naira.
