In her latest book, Echoes from the Past, Emmanuel harps on the daunting task of living with the effects of bad decisions and ones’ ability to break away from past misdeeds, hurts as well as moving on in life. The book, set in Nigeria and written in a simple narrative of daily mode of communication that cuts across all ethnic groups, demonstrates how holding on to past affects the future forever.

Narrated by three characters, Tara, Tokunbo and Daisy, the story provides an insight into how the past hurts, insecurities and regrets are reasons for present decisions.

In 295 pages, the book expounds on the challenges of insecurity between couples, class discrimination, bareness, single-parenting, marital frustrations, adoption, lack of trust, unemployment, the challenges of living with a difficult mother-in-law and infidelity.

The author also harps on the frustrations associated with doing business in Nigeria as experienced by Tokunbo. He particularly laments corruption in the maritime sector by freight forwarders and officials who will never give up demanding for bribe before rendering services. Although Echoes from the Past typifies men as business go-getters who want to look as if they have it all-together, the novel posits that men are emotive beings who need true friends and emotional support in their relationships just as much as women.

The ideas in the book are well presented in an orderly and relatable manner. The author uses simple and understandable language, mixed with acronyms, local names for character, pidgins, and slangs. Specifically, the author, in a dedicated section of the book provides meanings to confusing words for the readers especially those who are non-Nigerian.

Emmanuel employs attention-grabbing technique in the text that makes readers savour to see what would happen at the end. The book is a must read for everyone in a relationship; those who aspire to be and those who are not. It is recommended for students, relationship counsellors, academia, businessmen and the general public. The book is available in print and electronic formats in Nigeria and internationally.
