Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, will conduct about 80 elections in 16 states, following their overturn by various courts for one or more electoral offences. A statement issued by INEC Secretary, Mrs. Augusta Ogakwu, bars fresh candidates from participating in the new polls. Affected states include, Adamawa, Kaduna, Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Taraba, Imo, Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Rivers.

The statement said: “Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, at its meeting held on Monday, 1st February, 2016 considered and approved dates for the conduct of elections as ordered by the Court of Appeal.” The Commission said while elections in 69 constituencies in the affected states would see the participation of the same political parties and their respective candidates who participated in the annulled elections, 11 constituencies of seven states would have some political parties exempted.
Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will not participate in Anambra Central Senatorial District and Langtang South Federal Constituency elections in Anambra and Plateau states respectively. All Progressives Congress, APC, will also not participate in the elections of Lere West (Kaduna), Kogi Central, Kogi East, Okene/Ogori Magogo, Ofu and Ankpa 1, all in Kogi State. APC will also not participate in the elections in Suleja constituency in Niger State. All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and Social Democratic Party, SDP, will not participate in the elections in Aba North in Abia State and Demsa/ Numan/Lamurde of Adamawa State respectively. All elections are to be conducted between 27th January 2016 and March 19, 2016.
