Japan has protested to South Korea over its Olympics flag, which features islets laid claim to by both countries, the Japanese government said on Monday.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a news conference, noting the flags were waved during an exhibition game on Sunday by the inter-Korean women’s ice hockey team against Sweden for the Pyeongchang Winter Games.

“We lodged a protest with South Korea over the flags, we cannot accept the flags in the light of Japan’s position over the sovereignty of Takeshima.
“It is extremely regrettable,’’ Suga said, referring to the Japanese name of the South-Korean-administered islands.
Report says Seoul calls the disputed islets Dokdo.
“We would like to continue to urge South Korea to take appropriate steps over the issue,’’ Suga said.
In late January, South Korea demanded Japan immediately close a newly-opened museum in Tokyo which displayed maps and documents backing Japan’s territorial claim to the islets.
