The Korean government yesterday donated different sets of taekwondo equipment to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) for primary and secondary schools in Abuja. The equipment, Korea believes, would help Nigeria discover athlete at the grassroots.

Presenting the equipment to officials of the FCT UBEB at the Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria (KCCN), Abuja, Han Sungrae, the Director of the Centre, called for support for Team Nigeria at the PeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics, which is holding in South Korea.

Sungrae said the Korean government was prepared to collaborate with Nigeria in the development of sports, noting that the Korean partnership with FCT UBEB in educational, arts and sports has lasted for a long time, adding the collaboration has grown even stronger.

“Today we are once more donating sets of Taekwondo equipment including Kicking Pads, Mitts, Uniforms, Thermometer and First Aid boxes for use at different schools where Taekwondo is taught,” Han Sungrae said. He pointed out that four public pilot schools in FCT where children can learn the rudiments of the sport have been earmarked, adding that the Korean Centre has been supporting the project by making available taekwondo equipment and instructors for better learning.

“Taekwondo is a Korean martial arts that helps in the development of both physical and mental fitness of practitioners. It is even more important to children and young people because it makes them more disciplined and helps them develop their leadership ability.

“The purpose of this collaboration therefore, is to strengthen the bilateral relations between our countries and offer a wonderful opportunity to hatch young athletes with sound, physical and mental fitness as well as groom future educated champions who will win laurels in both national and international tournaments including the Olympics”, Sungrae added.
