The late Kwara State Governor Mohammed Lawal’s son, Hakeem, yesterday emerged as the state governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the 2023 general election.

Lawal was governor between 1999 and 2003 on the platform of the defunct All Peoples Party (APP).

Alhaji Hakeem Lawal defeated other aspirants like former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Shuaib Abdulraheem; Alhaji Tajudeen Audu Lafiaji, Alhaji Khaleel Bolaji, Alhaji Kale Belgore and Sunday Babalola, an engineer.

He polled 33 votes out of a total number of 63 votes at the primary election conducted at Atlantic Event Centre, Ilorin.

Prof Abdulraheem scored 16 votes, Alhaji Khaleel Bolaji got no vote, Alhaji Belgore got no vote, Babalola got two votes, while Alhaji Lafiaji polled 10 votes.
