“Home is where it all started for me. I will always want to give back to Nigeria, my community and that is why I am doing this,” said Mikel

“This is the time to do this for the kids and we are going to make sure we make this a success.”

The launch which had in attendance kids from across the city of Lagos was held at the CIS pitch, Lekki.

The 31-year-old midfielder who currently plays for Chinese club, Tianjin TEDA, launched the foundation in partnership with Kwese TV.

“When we kick off proper, it’s going to be about going to the streets, vilages to find talent, we know Nigeria has talents and this is what i want to do. We are looking at Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, he said.

The Olympic Bronze medallist also used the opportunity to clear the air over his decision to stay off from the Super Eagles and disclosed he will be returning to national team duties soon and when it’s time to retire, he will do it the proper way by making a formal announcement.

“I have been on break. I am not tired yet, i think the day i will retire, i will let everyone know before i make the statement, Mikel said.

Mikel has now joined the growing list of international stars who set up foundations in the twilight of their careers or just about when they are retiring.

Born in Jos, Plateau State, the superstar is an English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup, AFCON winner among other laurels.
