As a girl, she sang in the gospel choir before guitarist Ike Turner, who was eight years her senior, discovered her. He formed the “Ike and Tina Turner Revue”. In 1960 they stormed the hit parades with their first single “Fool in Love”. There followed hits like “River Deep – Mountain High” and “Nutbush City Limits”. In 1969 they made the breakthrough with their appearance in the opening act of the Rolling Stones.

The two got married in 1962, Ike turned out to be a brutal husband. She managed to leave him in 1976. To get over the divorce quickly, she gave up all financial claims. It took her decades to forgive him, she said much later. Ike Turner died in 2007.

As a single mother of two sons, Turner started over. She sang and danced first in clubs, hotels and company meetings. At 45 she made the breakthrough with her album “Private Dancer”. She won four Grammys.

Turner filled halls and stadiums of the world. When she sang in Rio de Janeiro in 1988 in front of more than 180,000 spectators, the huge audience came in the Guinness Book of Records. In 2009, she sang in Germany in front of hundreds of thousands of fans in Cologne, Berlin, Hamburg and Munich.

Turner lives at the Villa am Zurichsee, a 5000-square-foot estate with her German husband Erwin Bach. She met the music manager in the mid-80s. He is 16 years younger than her. The relationship lasted, and in 2013 the two married in Küsnacht. In 2017 Bach gave his wife a kidney. Tina Turner wrote about it in 2018 in a new biography.

Tina Turner retired from music in 2008 after celebrating her 50th anniversary as a performer.
