To boost the nation’s non-oil export profile, the Executive Director of the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Olusegun Awolowo has sought to partner with the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO) on technology transfer for processing exported items.

Leading a delegation of the agency to FIIRO to identify research findings that are commercialisable and good enough for exports, Awolowo stressed on the need to move Nigeria from an import economy to an export economy, citing a partnership with FIIRO as a means to such end.

On her part, the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of FIIRO, Gloria Elemo expressed gratitude to NEPC for believing in technology fabricated by FIIRO, adding that this would further strengthen the ties between FIIRO/NEPC.

She noted that the relationship would help improve the lot of youths for job creation and poverty eradication.

Elemo said that FIIRO is the home of indigenous technologies that can compete favourably with technologies imported into the country.

Speaking on the mission to FIIRO, Awolowo said the relevance of FIIRO to revamp the Nigeria economy cannot be over emphasized, adding that FIIRO, as the hub of indigenous technology in Nigeria, is very ready to boost Nigeria’s export earnings.

The NEPC helmsman frowned at the export of raw materials out of the country without adding any value to it through processing, lamenting that Nigeria is yet to harness the petrochemical potentials of the country as well as the agro allied areas in order to increase the foreign exchange base of the country.

Awolowo spoke of NEPC’s Zero Oil Plan to help Nigeria’s foreign exchange, expressing his dissatisfaction on the ignorance on Nigeria parastatals on not knowing what their counterparts are doing.

He stressed the effort of NEPC to encourage young Nigerians to go into exports.

Commenting on technology transfer, Awolowo said his agency will need FIIROs wealth of experience to make sure that Nigerians in the Diaspora have a pool of investment opportunities that abound in FIIRO and Nigeria as a whole.
