NERC approves ‎UNIBEN’s 7.5mw power project

The University of Benin has received the approval of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission for an embedded electricity generation licence to operate a 7.5 megawatts independent power project within the university.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Faraday Orumwense, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing journalists on its forthcoming 42nd convocation and founders’ day ceremonies scheduled to hold from November 23 to November 26, 2016.

Orumwense noted that the university also secured a licence to operate an independent electricity distribution network within the premises of the institution.

He said, “I am happy to inform you that the National Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved the embedded electricity generation licence to operate a 7.5mw IPP within the premises of the University of Benin and also an independent electricity distribution network licence within the University of Benin premises.

“I want to place on record that the successes we have achieved have been made possible through the support of all our stakeholders, especially the Federal Government. The Tertiary Education Trust Fund has been very generous to us with funds.”

The vice-chancellor explained that 61 graduands, out of a total of 9,890, would be awarded with first class degrees while 154 would receive doctorate degrees.

‎Orumwense said the convocation lecture would be delivered by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, SAN, on Friday.

He added that while a former VC of the institution, Prof. Godwin Oshodin, would be inducted into the university’s hall of fame, two eminent personalities, Dr. Godwin Ehigiamusoe and Prof. Eghosa Osagie, would be conferred with honourary degrees of Doctor of Science.

According to Orumwense, the university has in line with the vision of its founding fathers strove towards academic excellence, through the provision of modern infrastructure, academic research, lectures and awards.
