Nigeria adds two individual awards to WAFU Zone B U-17 AFCON title

Nigeria’s Samson Tijani and Kunle Olusegun both picked individual awards at the 2019 Africa U17 Cup of Nations qualifying championships, which ended at the weekend in Niamey, Niger Republic.

On Saturday, the Eaglets defeated Ghana 3-1 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 in regulation time, to pick the only ticket from the WAFU B Zone.The five-time world champions also had more to celebrate as midfielder, Samson Tijani was voted the MVP of the championship, while Kunle Olusegun’s four goals saw him pick the top scorers award.

The tournament served as a 2019 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.In the game on Saturday, Ghana broke the deadlock nine minutes into the second-half having contained Nigeria at the Stade Général Seyni Kountché in Niamey. However, Akinkunmi Amoo restored parity for the Golden Eaglets seven minutes after the hour-mark.

The two teams could not find the winning goal in the closing stages of the final. Nigeria went on to win 3-1 on penalties following an enthralling encounter.The 2019 U17 AFCON finals will be hosted by Tanzania in May.
