Nigeria at the weekend became the first winners of the African Floorball Championship when they defeated highly rated Burkina Faso 3-1 in the final of the competition held in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

The team, led by Maduka Edith Chinenye and tutored by Freeman Ekundayo, showed signs that they were in for big business when they defeated hosts, Cote d’Ivoire 7-3 in their first game and humiliated Togo 7-3 in their second game.

Although they lost 1-5 to Burkina Faso to finish second in the round robin stage, the team bounced back in the final match against the same foes and came out victorious by 3-1. The win gave Nigeria the first African Floorball Nations Cup title.

The team went to Cote d’Ivoire with only seven players and three officials because they could not secure enough funds to go there with the full compliment of players and officials.

In the Nigerian team were Hello Muiz, Hello Musa, Ogunruku Sunday and Sikiru Salawu, Offa Condition, Asuma Samson and Sulaiman Games.

The three officials were the president of the Nigeria Floorball Association, Miss Maduka Edith Chinenye, Mr. Agbai Akanu James and coach of the team, Mr. Freeman Ekundayo.

The African Floorball Championship featured Burkina Faso, Mali, Togo, Nigeria and host nation, Cote d’Ivoire.

The champions are expected to return to the country today.
