The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has commissioned three fully rehabilitated 100-bed capacity wards at the National Orthopedic Hospital Igbobi, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure through corporate social responsibility.

The intervention, executed by the NNPC Foundation Ltd./Gte., involved the upgrade of Wards G, H, and J, increasing the hospital’s improved bed capacity to 300.

Scope of work on the project included the installation of modern hospital beds and a central medical gas system to enhance patient care. The rehabilitation also covered the replacement of roofing and ceilings, upgrades to electrical and mechanical systems, and the installation of new vinyl flooring across the wards.

Prior to the intervention, the wards were reportedly in a dilapidated state, limiting their functionality and constraining the hospital’s ability to deliver effective in-patient services.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, represented by Chief Financial Officer Adedapo Segun, said the company views profitability beyond financial performance to include measurable social impact.

He described the project as a reflection of NNPC’s commitment to national development through targeted social investments, noting its significant implications for public health outcomes.

Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, Emmanuella Arukwe, said the initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen critical healthcare infrastructure and improve access to quality medical services.

She added that the hospital, having served Nigerians for decades, required support to enhance its service delivery.
“Our focus remains on practical interventions that improve lives and align with national healthcare priorities,” she said.

Medical Director of the hospital, Wakeel Lawal, disclosed that the management had sought assistance from the NNPC Foundation due to the deteriorating condition of the wards.
He commended the company for delivering what he described as a “world-class transformation,” noting that the upgrade has restored confidence among patients and healthcare workers.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including Executive Vice President, Business Services at NNPC Ltd., Sophia Mbakwe, as well as traditional representatives from the host community.

A major highlight of the event was the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by the GCEO’s representative, alongside the hospital’s leadership and community representatives.
