NOC honours Emoghavwe

The Nigeria Olympic Committee will on August 5 at Asaba Delta State honour one of Nigeria’s foremost Paralympian, Monday Emoghavwe with its Distinguished Merit Award.

The event, which is backed by the Delta State government, has been slated to hold at the Grand Resort Hotel and Convention Centre, Asaba.

Emoghavwe, who is the president of the Nigeria Paralympic Committee, will be recognised for his tremendous contributions to the development of para-power sports and the Paralympic Movement in Nigeria.

Born on April 2nd, 1963 in Abraka, Ethiope East L.G.A. of Delta State, Monday Emoghavwe attended Aevwaeke Primary School Abraka from 1973 to 1979 and also Abraka Grammar School from 1980 to 1985. He equally studied Business Administration in University of Lagos from 1995 to 1999 as well as Physical and Health Education at Federal College of Education, Zuba Abuja in 2012.

Emoghavwe has represented and won laurels for Nigeria at various international sports competitions. “In para-sports arena, Emoghavwe is noted as pioneer of sports for persons with disabilities. In collaboration with his colleagues, Emoghavwe started sports for the physically challenged persons at the Rehabilitation Centre of Spinal Cord Injuries Association of Nigeria (SCIAN) in Maryland, Lagos.

He began winning gold medals for Nigeria in Powerlifting at the fifth All African Games, Harare, Zimbabwe in 1995. He also won gold medal at the 1996 Paralympics Games in Atlanta, USA. To cap it all, Emoghavwe clinched the Paralympic gold medal in powerlifting at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games.

For his outstanding contributions to sports, the NOC has deemed it fit to recognise this illustrious son of Nigeria who has won a number of national and international awards.
