Newly elected president of the National Union of Banks Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees, NUBIFIE, Comrade Abdulrasheed Lukman has revealed that the union has dissociated itself from the planned strike being called by the United Labour Congress (ULC).
Lukman, who made the disclosure earlier in a phone conversation with INFOTRUST, also said that the union was no longer identifying with the labour union ULC, but with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The position was made at the just concluded delegates’ conference held in Lagos at the
weekend where new executive members were elected.
The president further reiterated the union’s position in a press release he signed and made available to journalists yesterday.
In the release, Lukman stated that the new leadership of the union was not only unaware of a planned industrial action by ULC, but also would not take part in it.
The statement reads in part: “The new leadership of the Union states categorically that the Union is not aware of and will not partake in any planned industrial action as called by the United Labour Congress.
“The process of engaging in industrial action is well stipulated in the laws of the land and rules of engagement.

“The union just emerged from its delegate conference and new leadership emerged. There
are a number of issues that beg for attention in what has been happening in our industry, shutting the financial industry at this critical period of our economic life is not an option.”
He further noted that the congress in session did not discuss nor did it ratify any industrial action, stressing that the union – NUBIFIE, dissociates itself from the planned action of the United Labour Congress.
Speaking on the union’s return to its former labour association, NLC, the president said: “The affiliation of NUBIFIE to United Labour Congress was done out of the context of the procedure and constitution of our great Union and the congress in session resolved and passed a resolution for the return of NUBIFIE to its original affiliation, NLC as contained in the union Constitution.”
The president further directed members in the Banks and Insurance Companies to shun any other directive contrary to the position of the union.
