Obaseki, others task lawyers in media on consumers protection

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki and forer President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Austin Aleghe, have tasked lawyers in the media to always protect the interest of consumers, who are ignorant of their rights and privileges as consumers of tangible and intangible services.

Speaking at a one-day Quarterly Roundable forum of Lawyers In the Media (LIM), which took place in Benin City, Obaseki said the power of the pen of the media and the power of the law work in relation to one aim.

Represented by the Solicitor-General of the state, Iyamu 0luwole, the governor said going by the theme of the programme: “Consumer Protection and Economic Development”, there is need for media intervention to help protect the right of the consumers.

The Chief Judge of the state, Justice Esohe Ikponwen, lamented that most times consumers do not get fair justice in court blaming it on quality of representation in law court.

lkponwen disclosed that lawyers in the media had done more since their existence, but urged them to be focused to ensure that those aspects in the society that have not been reported are brought out for the development of the society.

The Chairperson of the Nigeria Bar Assocition (NBA) in the Media Forum, Ms. Theodora Kio-Lawson, said the aim of the forum is to inject the driving process and what would encourage lawyers in the media, both print and electronic media, the need of promoting peace, stabilty and to disseminate vital information for the benefit of the society.

Former President of Nigerian Bar Association, (NBA) Barrister Augustine Alegeh, reiterated the need for lawyers to protect the consumers.He admonished lawyers to always know how to present their claims in court and to make sure their clients come with clear litigation prove of action.Alegeh’s said that for the consumers to good legal services that lawyers in the media have a lot of constraints to solve.
