Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested three suspected cultists at the valedictory party of graduating students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Ojere, Abeokuta.

The suspects, who allegedly terrorised the Abeokuta metropolis, were arrested while trying to force their way into the venue of the event at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.

The suspects were identified as Abdul Jelili of Agura Street, Enugada, Abeokuta; Oluwatosin Olanrewaju of Saraki area Adigbe, Abeokuta; and Yussuf Odesanya of Moses Ajulo Street, Alakuko, Lagos State.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Wednesday.

Oyeyemi said the suspects were apprehended while a search was being conducted on those coming to attend the sign-out programme

He added that security personnel at the gate of the event first arrested Jelili with a locally-made pistol loaded with a live cartridge.

The PPRO said, “The DPO, Kemta division, CSP Sunday Opebiyi, who was at the scene with his men, then sighted the duo of Oluwatosin Olanrewaju and Yussuf Odesanya, who were moving in a suspicious manner and he ordered that they should be searched as well.
On searching the bag with them, another locally-made pistol and five live cartridges were recovered therein.
On interrogation, the three suspects, who are not students of any institution, were unable to give a satisfactory account of their mission in the place and how they came about the guns found on them.

“Preliminary investigation, however, revealed that they were part of the hoodlums disturbing the peace of Abeokuta in recent times. They were said to be connected with a series of armed robbery and cult-related cases in the town.”

The PPRO said the state Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, had directed that the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation.
