Ogun state has once again set the pace with the Nigerian Drum Festival, a first of it’s kind. The four-day event kick started today, the 10th of April 2016 and is set to run through to the 22nd April 2016.
The opening ceremony held today at the Cultural Centre Kuto, Abeokuta recorded a great number of dignitaries in attendance. Among were the Executive Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunke Amosun, HRM Ooni of Ife Oba Adeyeye, Enitan Ogunwusi, HRH Oba Adedapo Tejuoso, other Royal fathers of Yoruba land, Hon commissioner of culture and Tourism Ogun state Bashorun Muyiwa Oladapo, DG National Council of Arts and Culture Mrs Dayo keshi, DG NTDC Mrs Sally Mbanefo, and many other important personalities.
Mrs Keshi in her address, mentioned that a cultural event such as NDF is a means of promoting culture and tourism thereby contributing to the nations economy. Mrs Mbanefo also explained that it is time for the Nigerian government to explore other avenues of generate fund and improve the nation’s economy; to look pass crude oil and explore the alluring world of tourism.
The event was characterized by breath-taking performances from various cultural artistes and troops. Drums from across the country were showcased, including the tallest indigenous drums in Africa, standing 16 and 17 feet tall. The high point of the event featured the beating of the tallest drums by the Executive Governor of Ogun state. He then urged Yorubas, Nigerians and Africans to unite as this is the essence of the the Festival.
The first day of the NDF ended, kick starting the four-day event. Expectations are high as to what to expect in the coming days and coming years.
