An eyewitness, Tunde Ajala, said the fight started around 1.38am following a heated argument between two friends, who had sang at a night club.

He added that security men, who became indignant with the attitude of the two friends, pushed them out of the club.

Ajala stated that one of the evicted friends, identified simply as Nejo, rushed to his car, fetched a machete and struck at his friend’s head.

According to him, as Nejo was trying to drive out of the area, his injured friend grabbed the steering wheel and struggled with the driver.

After some minutes, Nejo’s friend was said to have become weak and fell off the vehicle. One of the rear tyres crushed him and he died on the spot.

The eyewitness stated that his death incensed the hoodlums around, who chased after Nejo and engaged his men in a fight, which resulted in many getting injured.

Ajala said, “There is a guy popularly known as Nejo; he and his friend were in a club singing with a guy called AZ. I can’t really tell what happened between both of them while they were singing, but they later had a heated argument. The security men at the club pushed them out after attempts to mediate in the dispute failed.

“When Nejo came out of the club, he brought out a machete and cut the other one in his head. As he was about to drive off, the victim grabbed the steering wheel to prevent him from escaping; Nejo then applied force and drove him violently on the road.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that the Divisional Police Officer of the Lamgbasa Police Station, Adaobi Okafor, mobilised her men to the area to quell the trouble.

It was gathered that four hoodlums, who tried to prevent the police from carrying out their duties, were arrested.

A police officer, who pleaded anonymity, said, “When we got to know about the serious fight in the area, we rushed to the place to quell the situation. We arrested four hoodlums, who tried to prevent us from arresting some of the participants in the fracas.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, did not answer calls made to his mobile telephone line and also did not respond to a text message sent to him on the matter. [PUNCH]
