The leadership of the alumni association of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, has asked the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Saburi Adesanya, to present the statement of account of the association in his custody.
The association said this in a statement signed by its president, Mr Afolabi Sorunke and other officials, which was made available to The Punch on Monday.
In the statement, it accused Adesanya of maligning members in a recent meeting that he had with some of them who are also staff of the university.
The statement reads, “You inferred that the focus of the executive committee is to loot the treasury with style. That even as we don’t pay our annual due, we want to expend what is in the till. As at January 3, 2017, the total income in the association’s account (including the N2m released by the university in two tranches of N1m each) is N2,872,500, whereas total expenditure is N3,622,500. Yet, the bank balance as at January 3, 2017 is N953,587.28.

“We demand to see the statement of the alumni account in your custody over the years. We also demand to see the bank‘s statement to support. We demand that he that comes to equity must come with clean hands.
“We actually asked you to return the alumni building which you had taken over as office for the university staff. You not only declined to return the alumni building, you vehemently refused to allocate an office for the alumni to use as secretariat. It is impossible for the executive committee to loot the treasury like before because all expenses from N2 million and above must go through the Finance and General Purpose Committee.’’
But the Vice Chancellor has dismissed the allegations. In a telephone interview with our correspondent on Sunday, Adesanya urged the alumni not to rely on hearsay.
“Were they at the meeting? I don’t react to hearsay. Is it proper for them to go to the press when they are not strangers? If there are issues, they should come and discuss with the university management. I think I have a right to educate people.
“I told the people at the meeting on how not to be alumni. If they took that as alluding to them, then it is up to them. They should have come to me. That is the first thing to do. I don’t have any issue with them,’’ he said.
