Parents have decried the five-day warning strike embarked on by teachers in the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday.

The teachers had down tools over non-payment of their promotion arrears from 2014 to 2018 and non-implementation of 2020 and 2021 annual increment.

Our correspondent gathered that students who had gone to school were sent home.

Speaking with our correspondent, the FCT Chairman, Parent Teachers Association, Usman Gafar, lamented the strike and called on the FCT administration to resolve the matter in the interest of  students.

He said, “We are not happy with this strike, the FCT administration has to do something and they must be fast about it.

“The teachers are fighting for their rights, the administration should call them for a discussion and see what they can do to resolve this issue.

“Our children are the victims and leaving them to continue staying out of school could be a problem.”

However, the FCT Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Stephen Knabayi said the FCT minister had intervened.

He said, “It was agreed that for us in the FCT, the allowances of our teachers will be paid for 2017 since 2016 had been paid. “Consideration will also be given to payment for 2018 before the end of the year.”

He also said the issues of security, particularly in the schools in the vulnerable areas, were discussed.
