PDP’s senatorial candidate’s aide in Imo shot |

An aide to Jones Onyereri, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Imo West senatorial candidate, Nnamdi Nsorom, was attacked yesterday morning by suspected political assassins in Imo State. Nsorom was shot at the front of Onyereri’s house behind Concord Hotel in Owerri at about 8:00a.m.

In reaction, politicians and human rights activists have condemned the assassination attempt on the PDP Imo West Senatorial candidate in the just concluded National Assembly election, Onyereri. Onyereri is currently the House of Representatives committee chairman on currency.Gunmen had stormed his residence, but only shot an ally in front of the house, Nsorom. Nsorom is currently at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, where he is receiving intensive medical care after the gunshot.

Police investigators also visited the victim at the hospital. Condemning the brazen attack, Imo PDP governorship candidate, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, called on the security operatives to step up action to secure property and life of residents in the state.

In a statement issued by the founder of Save Imo, Nze Ebubeagu, the attack was described as an attempt to politically scare supporters of a political party from coming out to vote in the state on Saturday. The statement read in part: “Save Imo condemns the spate of politically motivated violence and assassinations or its attempts at the verge of the 2019 general elections, particularly the governorship and state House of Assembly elections. Elections should not be a do or die affair.

“Why would any Godly person or politician want to shed blood or take a life just to win an election? We particularly condemn the attempt to kill Hon. Jones Onyerieri this afternoon in front of his house in Owerri wherein Nnmadi Nsorom became the victim and is lying critically down at FMC Owerri.“We also condemn the attack on AA governorship candidate, Ugwumba Nwosu, in Omuma Oru East LGA where he went for campaign. Power comes from God and through the people. We call on the police and sister security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and property prior, during and after the March 9 elections,” he wrote.

The gathered that no less than three persons have been killed in different parts of the state recently by unknown gunmen suspected to be politically motivated.The Commissioner of Police, Dazuki Galadanchi, when contacted said he was in a meeting and would give his reaction later.
