Policeman Dismissed Five Months After Shooting, Killing Five In Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command on Friday announced the dismissal of an inspector, Edem Ebong, who shot and killed five persons in the state, five months ago.

This was contained in a statement by the command titled, ‘Re: Shooting Incident At Golf Estate Enugu; AIG Zone 13 Approves Dismissal And Prosecution Of Police Inspector.’

The statement, signed by the Command Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, revealed that the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Zone 13, Muri Musa,has approved Ebong’s dismissal.

On June 20, 2021, it was reported that Ebong, attached to Special Protection Unit Base 9, Umuahia, Abia State, started shooting residents at a lotto office, leaving five dead and four injured.

Five months after the incident, the Enugu Command announced the inspector’s dismissal and prosecution.

The statement partly read, ” The Enugu State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Zone 13, Ukpo-Dunukofia, Anambra State, Muri Umar Musa, has approved the recommended punishment of dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force and prosecution of Inspector Edem Ebong, hitherto attached to Special Protection Unit Base 9 Umuahia, for the offence of murder.

“The approval is sequel to the Command’s conclusion of disciplinary trial and thorough investigation launched into the case of alleged shooting and killing of five persons, as well as the injury of four others for no justifiable reasons, by the Police Inspector, at Golf Estate Enugu, on 20/06/2021.
