Golf enthusiasts from across the country will shift their attention to the Port Harcourt Golf Club this weekend as the Garden City leg of the International Pairs regional qualifiers begin.

The competition will feature golfers from the South-South and South East region, who will fight for the 15 slots available for the region. At the end of the competition, the regional winners will gather in Uyo for the national final from where Nigeria’s representatives to the international event will be picked.

The just concluded Lagos qualifiers featured golfers from the South West region with the pair of Tim Ayomike and Akeem Lawal emerging victorious, beating 41 other Pairs to the title. The duo grossed a total of 66-stableford points to lead the pack of 20 teams that made the finals.

Other winners in the keenly contested encounter are the pair of S. Winston and Emmanuel Oluoha with 62-points, Evelyn Oyome and Biodun Oyewoga, 61-points, Amaechi Ndili and Njide Ndili 59-points, Joe Oduah and Raphael Adewale 58-points, Charles Idowu and Kenneth Osuji 58-points among others.

Speaking shortly after being crowned the regional champions, Ayomike and Lawal restated their determination to go all the way to win the coveted International Pairs trophy in Portugal, saying they are confident they would win in Uyo and represent Nigeria in the world finals.

The winners will be given an all expense paid trip to Portugal in November.

Satisfied by the outcome of the competition Olukoya said the number of qualifiers has to be increased from 15-pairs to 20-pairs, adding that this became necessary in view of the number of participants and good showing by most of the players.
