As the craze to explore the web via smart devices leaves many students less interested in reading, a teacher at TopFlight College, Ifako Gbagada, Yejide Adeyeye, has advised youths that reading voraciously will widen their horizon and adequately equip them with the right tools to make changes that the country desires.
This is as exploration and oil production services outfit, Total E and P Nigeria Limited, has restated its commitment to continue attracting and developing talented youths to ensure knowledge transfer and continuity in the society.
Adeyeye, who spoke at a Total Book Reading and Open Day Forum held in Lagos, urged youths to fuel their passion for knowledge acquisition, by cultivating sound reading habit and being less dependent on smart devices.
The schoolteacher said the time has come for students to see reading as another form of entertainment that would empower them once inculcated.
In her submission, Deputy General Manager, Public Affairs and Communication of the company, Kenechi Esomeju, urged students to cultivate sound reading habit, saying it will help them gain knowledge, improve their health, communication skills and improve their imagination and their ability to focus on tasks.

Esomeju said the fact that the oil and gas sector is mainstay of the country’s economy further informed the company’s decision to open its doors to secondary schools students, which it gives a glimpse into its activities, and ignite their interests in the sector in particular, and the energy industry as a whole.
Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule, who spoke at the event, reinstated the administration’s commitment to the provision of quality education for youths in the state, adding that the state would continue to provide better infrastructure and facilities that would enhance effective and quality education in schools.
Represented by Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, Adebule said one of the ways the state government is encouraging reading culture is the renovation and upgrade of public libraries in 18 secondary schools across the state with books, computer systems and Internet facilities.
She commended the company for sustaining the culture of reading among the youth through the initiative, adding that it would enhance and promote the education of children and build a better nation.
She therefore urged the students to take advantage of the opportunity to equip themselves adequately through reading wide for knowledge, and also become change agents by encouraging their colleagues to embrace reading habit as a way of building self-worth and excelling in life.
