Red Tigers win Lagos Grassroots Football Championship

Ejigbo-based Red Tigers F.C. at the weekend defeated Sunny F.C of Isolo to win the 2017 Lagos Grassroots Cup. The Ejigbo boys beat Sunny F.C 5-4 through a penalty shoot out after regular time had ended in a goalless draw.

Red Tigers, owned by former Super Eagles’ attacker, Emmanuel Emenike, and Sunny F.C missed several scoring chances during relegation time to the dismay of their vociferous fans, who trooped to the Digital Training Institute Stadium, Oshodi to cheer them to victory.

Earlier, Sammy F.C of Ijegun equaled their best performance since 2015 by beating Arise and Shine of Ipaja to win the bronze medal.The top three teams received cash prizes and medals, while the champion also received a giant trophy presented by grand patron of the competition, Mrs. Clementina Doregos.

Speaking at the event, chairman of the occasion, Agboola Dabiri, a former Chairman of Lagos State Sports Council, who is the Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Central Business District, commended Wonderland Sports for providing enabling environment for youths to exhibit their skills.

Also at the event, three prominent Nigerians were honoured for their contributions to youth empowerment through sports. They include Christian Okpara of The Guardian Newspapers, Francis Ifeajika of Suntory Foods and Beverages, as well as Godwin Aruwayo of Naija Fm.
