The management of Rivers Hoopers Basketball Club has threatened that the club may withdraw from the median FIBA Africa Basketball League (ABL), if fund is not made available for the team to travel.

Other countries have already started their campaign in different centres, but the Nigeria representatives, Rivers Hoopers, is still in Port Harcourt. The club is scheduled to begin their campaign weekend in Morocco.

General Manager of the club, Ifie Ozaka, hinted that the club was considering sending a letter to FIBA notifying them of Rivers Hoopers intention to pull out of the competition, if necessary measures are not put in place.

Ozaka however, called on the club’s sponsor, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike to come to their rescue.

Speaking with The InfoTrust yesterday, media officer of Rivers Hoopers Basketball club, Queen Moseph noted that the club was still waiting for the governor to release funds for the team.

“We are waiting for the governor to assist raise funds for the team. Other countries have already started playing in their various centres, Hoopers group will begin their campaign next weekend in Morocco.  Based on the election the Rivers state, the government has not been able to address the monetary issues. If by Monday or Tuesday there is no money for the team to travel, that means Hoopers will not compete in the ABL championship”, she said.

A withdrawal of Rivers Hoopers from the FIBA Africa Basketball League will lead to a ban from subsequent FIBA Africa Club competitions.

Rivers Hoopers are scheduled to play their first ABL game against host, AS Sale of Morocco on Friday March 1, 2019.
