Captain Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick and Phil Jones all missed training on Wednesday ahead of Manchester United’s Europa League clash with Saint-Etienne on Thursday.

United, who are unbeaten in their last 16 Premier League games, welcome the French side to Old Trafford for the first leg of their last 32 tie.

England internationals Rooney, Carrick and Jones were the most conspicuous absentees from the 23-man squad at United’s Aon Training Complex west of Manchester.

Jones has not played since sustaining a foot injury in United’s recent 0-0 draw with Hull City, but Rooney and Carrick were both on the bench for last Saturday’s 2-0 win over Watford.

United manager Jose Mourinho is due to address the media later on Wednesday.
