LAGOS State Service Commission has assured local government workers the present administration will improve their welfare, but they should not be late or tardy at work.

Speaking during the commission’s job evaluation visit at Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area in Lagos, the Commissioner representing Ikeja Division, Mr Ajomale Oladipo, said the administration had provided for buses to commute workers to their locations.

“The governor has handed over 35 new buses to the civil servants in fulfilment of his promise to ease transportation problem and improve the welfare of civil servants …” he said.

He assured the workers that the minimum wage would be paid as soon as the Federal Government approved the payment.

“Our present governor is one of the pioneer fighters for the minimum wage and he is willing to go ahead with payment as soon as he gets the approval from the Federal Government. For a governor who is just coming into office, the fact that he pays salary as at when due is an ultimate goal. The last salary alert actually came in on a Sunday, which motivates workers to do more. We will appreciate if council chairmen also emulate Governor Sanwo-Olu by increasing welfare packages for council workers,” he said.

He bemoaned the lackadaisical attitude of workers, saying lateness or absence at work will not be condoned.

“It is a great obstacle to the development of the state. It is part of the duty of the commission to carry out disciplinary actions against staff. We are going to introduce the electronic attendance system…to make sure that everybody comes to work on time and every day,” he said.

He urged workers to report harassment, intimidation and sexual assault to the commission, promising it would be treated in confidence.

“Please feel free to report any career management issues to the commission that is what we are being paid for. The survey forms given to newly recruited staff to fill will give a true picture of the system so that we can change some of our old ways of doing things”

Commissioner representing Badagry Division Mr. Bab Akinyomi urged heads of department to train workers on the job and be fair to all in assigning roles.

“It is the sole responsibility of the commission to train senior officers while HODs are expected to train the junior officers, assign duties to them and endeavor to correct their mistakes,” Akinyomi said. [THE NATION]
