For students, parents and members of staff of Bishop Howells Memorial Grammar School Bariga, Lagos, celebrating Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage is not only necessary, but of utmost priority. This is what informed the celebration of Cultural Day in the school, where everybody was dressed in gorgeous indigenous cultural attires. Various songs were rendered in Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, and other local languages. News was also cast in Yoruba and Igbo languages.
Principal of Bishop Howells Memorial Grammar School, Reverend Bamidele Osunyomi, explained the essence of the cultural Dday in the lives of the students, saying, “First, as a missionary school, we teach the students the spirit of unity and love. There are many cultural groups here, but what brings us together is the love of Christ.

As a school, the classroom is where you see students from the Igbo culture, Yoruba Hausa and other cultures sitting down to receive lectures. They also stay in the same hostel together. We try to imbibe in them that spirit of unity for them to work together and live together, and we believe if this is extended to the home and community, our country will be a better place to live.”
With the theme ‘Cultural Integration, a Tool for Unity in Diversity,’ he further stated that Nigeria’s culture is gradually fading away, though not dying and that is why “we are encouraging everybody to dress traditionally. Schools and churches should also encourage cultural day celebration and teach the children the importance of culture from the cradle.
“Government can also encourage culture. For instance, I love what Lagos State Government has done at Tafawa Balewa Square. They have turned the place around and made it a tourist centre of international repute.”
On his part, Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Samuel Edochie, described the event as remarkable, saying it would make a great impact on the lives of the students. He also advised parents to encourage their children speak their various mother tongues.
