Scramble For Kebbi’s Number 1 Seat Through The Ballot Box

The 2019 governorship election in Kebbi State was conducted peacefully with the incumbent governor, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of the All Progressive Congress (APC) retaining his seat following his reelection on Saturday March 9, 2019.

Although 31 aspirants jostled for the coveted seat of the number one citizen of Kebbi, Bagudu emerged victorious after beating all the contestants including that of the major opposition party, Senator Isa Galaudu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Bagudu polled 673,717 votes to beat the PDP candidate, Senator Isah Galaudu who scored 106,633 votes.

According to the Collation/Returning officer, Armiya”u Bichi, a total number of 820,078 voters were accredited, 814084 voters cast their votes while 20,696 were rejected.

The state has 1,789,075 registered voters.

“The APC candidate, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu having scores the highest votes is declared winner and returned,” he declared.

However just like in many parts of the country, the governorship election in Kebbi witnessed voter apathy as many electorates did not turn up at polling units the way they did during the Presidential and National House of Assembly Elections that was held two weeks ago.

The incumbent governor who was also the governorship candidate of the APC, Senator Bagudu as well as all the APC candidates in the entire National and State Houses of Assembly candidates secured their seats successfully.

According to some electorates, who spoke to LEADERSHIP in Kebbi the low turnout may be due to the gale of defection in favor of APC. Many say they will not vote because most of the opposition party notable figures have defected to APC.

Bello Umar (31) told LEADERSHIP that, “Look I will not waste my time to join the line and vote. The politicians especially from PDP are now defecting to APC because they know APC will win in Kebbi. There is no any meaningful opposition party in Kebbi that can challenge APC, so why should I waste my time to vote for a candidate I know will not survive the contest,” he said.
