Shasha Mayhem: Oyo NUJ Accuses Security Agencies Of Partiality

The Oyo State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), on Sunday, accused the security agencies of being partial in handling the recent civil disturbance at Shasha market in Ibadan.

DAILY POST recalls that the market was recently engulfed with crisis as a result of the death of a Yoruba man, Mr. Shakirideen Adeola, who died as a result of the charm allegedly placed on him by another person, who is from Hausa ethnic group.

Our correspondent, however, gathered that about seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the burning of shops and houses in the area.

DAILY POST gathered that all the seven suspects arrested by the police are all from the Yoruba ethnic group.

NUJ, while reacting, condemned the arrest of only Yoruba ethnic group.

The union in a communique issued at the end of its March Congress, also urged the Federal Government to beef up the security network nationwide for the security of lives and Property.

The union in a communique signed by the three-man communique drafting committee, Sola Samuel-Ojewole (Chairman), Dupe Fehintola ( Secretary) and Musliudeen Adebayo (member) also advised Oyo State government to put in place all machineries for effective security.

The union also condemned excesses of customs officers breaking shops to confiscate alleged contraband goods.

“That the Federal Government should beef up security networks nationwide for the security of lives and Property.

“That Oyo State government should put in place all machineries for effective security.

“That the Congress decried the arrest of only Yoruba suspects after a recent Sasa public disturbance, putting questions on the security agents’ partial operational approach.

“That the congress condemned the spate and excesses of customs officers breaking shops to confiscate alleged contraband goods.

“That government at all levels should put up synergy to end the porous Security network across Nigeria, to safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity.

“That the Congress noted that since Vice President B Zone had retired since August 19, 2020 and ceases to be member of OYO NUJ under the platform through which he became the VP and in accordance with the NUJ constitution (Article 6 (8) that if any officer retires or becomes unemployed, he shall be allowed to continue in office for six months after which, he ceases to be a member of NUJ, no such person should have right to hold office and the post shall be filled through a bye-election.

“In line with the above Article 6 section 8, Comrade Cosmas Olalekan Oni must vacate his post and stop parading himself as VP B Zone henceforth.

“That in line with the prevailing developmental projects and more importantly; newly launched 30-acre land Journalists Estate on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway and the novel take off, of the Journalists Trust Fund to provide free interest loans and cater for members in distress, the Ademola Babalola-led Union leadership was given a pat on the back and eulogised for making giant strides in positioning Oyo NUJ as truly Pacesetter Council in the comity of other State Councils in the Union.”
