Sokoto State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Wednesday elected new executives to run the affairs of the chapel for the next 3 years. 

Speaking before the election, the outgoing chairman of the chapel, Habibu Harisu, thanked members for the support and understanding he has enjoyed from them while his leadership tenure lasted.

Habibu further  appealed to the chapel members to extend same supportive mentality to the incoming executives. 

After the election which was held at the Correspondents Chapel office, NUJ Press Center, Ankeli Emmanuel of National Accord Newspaper pulled 18 votes emerged as chairman defeating his co contestant Ismail Umar of Voice of Nigeria who garnered 9 votes. 

Musa Ubandawaki of Vanguard Newspaper defeated Adeniyi Olugbemi of Leadership Newspaper, to emerge as Secretary, while Umar Danladi Ado of Triumph Newspaper floored Innocent Onuminya of This Day Newspaper to clinch the position of Treasurer.

Other candidates who were elected unopposed, include Olakunle Maruf (Tribune Newspaper) as Assistant Secretary, Adamu Suleiman (The Nation) as Vice Chairman, Shaf’aatu Suleiman (The Sun Newspaper) as  Auditor and Ibrahim Goronyo of Aljazerah Newspaper as Financial Secretary.

Addressing members after the elections in his acceptance speech, the newly elected chairman, Ankeli Emmanuel,thanked members for the peaceful conduct of the election. 

Ankeli, also promised to run an all inclusive, members oriented and transparently objective leadership, with commitment to promotion of peace, welfare and ensuring adherence to the ethics of the noble profession. 

“”Let me appreciate all of you for the show of love and the commitment to our noble profession. I must admit that, all of you have been very wonderful. And I promise to ensure that everybody is carried along. We are only elected to serve the interest of all””.  Ankeli noted. 

On his part, Sokoto State NUJ Council Chairman, Usman Binji, congratulated the newly elected executives of the Correspondents Chapel, even as appreciated the credentials committee for ensuring a smooth electoral process. 

Binji further thanked  chairman of the newly elected executives of the Correspondents’ Chapel for harping on inclusivity and collaboration among members. He also urged them to always align with the broader objectives of the state council.

Addressing members, chairman of the 7 member credentials committee, Abdallah Elkurebe, said they are satisfied members and contestants adjudged the conduct of the election as free, fair, and credible, adding, winners should strive to carry every body along.
