The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party has assumed the national leadership of the party following a ruling by the Supreme Court of Nigeria that invalidated its 2025 national convention.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the BoT said its decision to take charge was aimed at preventing a leadership vacuum after the court nullified the November 15–16, 2025 national convention held in Ibadan, which produced the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki.

The apex court, in a unanimous decision by a five-member panel, also upheld the suspension of Samuel Anyanwu, Umar Bature, and Kamaldeen Ajibade from the party. They had served as National Secretary, National Organising Secretary, and National Legal Adviser, respectively.

According to the BoT, the judgment effectively nullifies all actions taken by the affected officials, including the appointment of Abdulrahman Mohammed as Acting National Chairman, the formation of a caretaker committee, and the conduct of the March 29, 2026 convention in Abuja.

“The implication is that both the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led and Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led working committees stand dissolved,” the statement said, adding that the development places the responsibility of leadership on the BoT as the party’s second-highest organ under Section 32(5) of its constitution.

The BoT said it had consequently assumed control of the party’s national leadership as a “constitutional remedial measure” to stabilise and reposition the PDP.

It also announced plans to convene an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to appoint an interim NWC that will oversee the party’s affairs and ensure compliance with the Electoral Act ahead of the 2027 general elections.

All staff of the party were directed to resume duties at the national secretariat under the supervision of the BoT pending the constitution of the interim leadership.

The trustees commended party stakeholders, including Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde, members of the National Assembly caucus, and other organs of the party for their support during the crisis.
The BoT called on party leaders and members to set aside differences and work towards reconciliation in the interest of the party and the country.

“The PDP has suffered enough. The time has come for unity, sacrifice and genuine reconciliation to restore stability and reposition the party,” the statement added.
The statement was signed by the BoT Chairman, Adolphus Wabara.
