Twenty-one-year-old Darasimi Babatunde was on Tuesday arraigned before an Osun State Magistrates’ Court in Ile-Ife for allegedly aiding the escape of some people suspected to be members of the Eiye Confraternity.

Babatunde, said to be a member of the same cult, allegedly assisted other members of the group to escape arrest on May 3, 2019, in Ile-Ife.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Osanyintuyi, said the accused and some others yet to be apprehended were members of an unlawful society.

Osanyintuyi said the suspect conspired with others, who had not yet been arrested, and assisted some members of the Eiye Confraternity to escape arrest.

According to him, the offences contravene sections 4 (a), (b), 126 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun State, 2002.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the three counts bordering on conspiracy and belonging to an unlawful society.

Counsel to the accused, Mr A. A. Kolawole, applied for his bail and pledged that his client was ready to stand trial.

The case was adjourned till July 8 for hearing. [PUNCH]
