Over 100 golfers are expected to participate at the Sylva Umole at 70 Birthday Golf Tournament, which tees-off today at the Benin Club Golf Course, Benin City, Edo State.
The birthday tourney will feature golfers drawn from various golf clubs in Nigeria, mostly from Edo, Lagos, Delta and other South-South states. Among the clubs are Ibori Golf and Country Club, Asaba; Shell Golf Club, Warri; Ikoyi Club, Lagos and UBTH Golf Club, Benin.

According to a member of the organising committee, Kingsley Okunbo, the tournament is being bankrolled by the Sylva Umole Committee of Friends in collaboration with the Club to celebrate Umole whom he described as a great golfer and friend, who has paid his dues in the game.
Okunbo, the former captain of the club, noted that all necessary arrangements to ensure a hitch free tournament have been perfected by the committee.“The tournament is significant to us in the club because for somebody like him to have clocked 70 years on this planet earth is worth celebrating. He is hale and hearty, and has clocked the Biblical stipulated age by God’s grace, and it is our prayer that he will celebrate 100 years and beyond in Jesus name.
He confirmed that fabulous prizes and trophies would be given to golfers that distinguished themselves at the event.“There are prizes for all the categories in both men’s and ladies event respectively. Also, for men’s and ladies veteran, super veteran category, best gross award, nearest the pin and many more categories. So it is going to be exciting and competitive all through the day,” he said.
