Following the success recorded at this year’s International Squash Classics held at the Okoya Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, at the weekend, the Executive Chairman of the state’s Sports Commission, Dr. Kweku Tandor has described the competition as a good way to expose budding talents.

The tournament sponsored by Lagos State, was organised by the state’s Squash Association in collaboration with the Sports Commission and the Nigeria Squash Federation.

The classics was dominated by Egyptians, who won both the men and women categories of the squash tournament.

Tandor told The Guardian yesterday that the classics is a series of events that would continue and be supported under the administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

“This is actually the third edition of the Lagos International Squash Classics. It is one of the series of international sporting events that we have been having in Lagos State since 2014. This is now part of the programmes of the Lagos State Sports Commission and it is budgeted for year yearly.

“We started with Badminton, Table tennis, Squash, Athletics, Swimming and Scrabble. Last year we had six and a year before another six. It is a series of events that have come to stay in Lagos and that is why we have continued through the support of His Excellency, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to support each of these classics events on a yearly basis,” he said.

Tandoh added that it was part of the Sports Commission’s duty to offer the needed technical assistance since each of the classics were organised mainly by the relevant sports association.
