Three female writers have arrived Iseyin, Oyo State, for the August/September 2018 Ebedi Writers Residency session. They are, Maryjane Okon, Ayobami Odunyemi and Chinelo Chikelu.

Okon, who is a classroom teacher and performance poet, is an unpublished writer from Akwa Ibom State. She hopes to spend her time in Ebedi to complete her first poetry collection and motivational book, which she has been writing for some time now. She will also mentor secondary school students in Iseyin and its environ in the art of public elocution and the preparation of Ibibio cuisine.

The second writer, Odunyemi, from Osun State, is a graduate of Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomosho, Oyo State. She has been writing since childhood.In addition, she has attended many writing courses organised by the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW). She currently works for an Ibadan-based insurance company.

Some of her works written in English and Yoruba have been published in international and local online literary platforms. It is her desire to complete her two novels in English and Yoruba during her stay in Ebedi.

She will use her time to mentor secondary school students in Iseyin and environs in the art of writing for children.The third writer, Chikelu, an indigene of Enugu State, is a graduate of Enugu State University of Science and Technology. She currently works as an arts and books reporter with the Abuja-based Leadership newspaper. She hopes to use her time in Ebedi to complete work on her first book entitled; Arts As A Tool For Awareness Creation on The SDGs. She will also teach secondary school students in Iseyin and environ on how to speak the Igbo language.

The Ebedi International Writers Residency is a private initiative for writers to complete their ongoing works in a conducive environment at no cost. Since its inception, in 2012, the facility has hosted more than 100 writers from 10 different African countries. It also offers publishing opportunities to its Fellows through an arrangement with one of Nigeria’s foremost publishing outfit, the Literamed Publishers, Oregun Lagos.
