Total gets commendation from Akoka community

A Total filling station located at Akoka community in Lagos State, have received commendation from its host community for its swift response in addressing and fixing a fuel leakage from its underground tank, that polluted some residents water sources last year.

It was reported few months ago of the incident of an accidental fuel leakage at the station, which resulted in contamination of the water sources of some houses in the community.

The residents said the firm have since carried out a thorough remediation and have brought the environment to a better state.

At an event organized recently in Lagos by the Akoka Community Development Association (ACDA) to honour those who have contributed tremendously to the development of the community, the Chairman, ACDA, Segun Adesanya, said that according to reports from the Lagos State government, Total have done all they were required to do.

According to him, the station notified him of the spillage from their station and also took immediate actions to inform the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) about the pollution and Total was ordered on what to do.

“We agreed that Total should provide the affected people with fresh water, and Total did it to the best of my knowledge.

“What we have done was to appreciate people who have been there, who have given their time treasure and talent to the development and the betterment of our community.

“According to the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEPA, National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Total have done all they were supposed to do,” Adesanya said.

Razak Odufuwa, who claimed to be the landlord of No. 57, St Finbarrs College Road, Akoka, whose house was affected, also commended the reaction of the company, saying they acted swiftly to remedy the situation.
