A total of 3, 514 candidates were yesterday part of the matriculation of Nigeria’s premier institution, University of Ibadan as bonafide students for the 2017/2018 academic session.
The figure also includes 446 direct entry candidates who emerged out of the 2,659 who applied for admission in the university. Speaking at the ceremony held at the International Conference Centre, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, broke down the summary of the newly-admitted students thus: Agriculture (241), Arts (620), College of Medicine (581) and Education (691), Law (165), Renewable Natural Resources (178), Science (631), Technology (376), The Social Sciences (378) and veterinary Medicine (99).

The VC said the success rate for admission in the institution currently stands at 6.6 per cent for UTME students while that of the direct entry admission stood at 16.8 percent, stating that the “very high quality of our intakes on account of the rigorous and transparent admission process, it is much easier for the camel to pass through the eye of the needle than for a UTME applicant to secure admission into this institution. “We make bold to state here that our admission is easily the most competitive among all the universities in the Nigerian University system.”
He warned the students not to engage in any form of cooking in their rooms or use boiling rings and that the use of hot plate and gas cookers will not be tolerated in the halls, adding that anyone who flouts this rule will face the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC).
He urged the students to shun the use of drugs with particular reference to the codeine in cough syrup, tramadol, rohypnol, ecstacy and various mixtures of cannabis, noting that the dangers associated with the use of drugs were numerous. “Academic performances suffer greatly from the use of these drugs and graduating with a decent grade may be incompatible with regular drug use. A student might find himself or herself sleeping through lecture periods while under the influence of the drugs or unable to report for examination as well.
