The presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has confirmed that he received a telephone call from the United States Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, earlier on Wednesday.
In a statement the former vice president posted on his verified Facebook account, Atiku said, Mr Pompeo assured him of the commitment of the international community to free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria.
The statement reads, “Earlier today, I received a call from US Secretary of State, Secretary Pompeo, who reaffirmed the international community’s commitment to free and fair elections in Nigeria.”
According to the presidential hopeful, Pompeo seized the opportunity to wish him and all Nigerians peaceful elections.

The Atiku-Pompeo conversation is coming a day after President Muhammadu Buhari received a similar call from the former president of the United States, Bill Clinton, for his inability to attend the Peace Accord signing ceremony in Abuja, Wednesday night.
President Buhari, who received a telephone call from President Clinton, Wednesday night, described him as a friend of the country and commended him for his constant support for the peace, stability, and progress of Nigeria under a democratic dispensation.
President Buhari also assured him of his commitment to free, fair and credible elections in the weeks ahead,” presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina said in a statement on Thursday.
