A university Don, Professor Richard Akinyeye has decried the falling standard of education in Nigeria and called for attitudinal change to reverse the trend.
Akinyeye who is the National President of the Aisegba Community Grammar School, Aisegba Ekiti Alumni Association said the situation is evident in the quality of products from the nation’s secondary schools
This came as a 1995 alumnus of the school, Mr Kayode Adamolekun admonished Nigerians to join hands with the government in the development of education in Nigeria.
Adamolekun also canvassed compulsory Information and Communication Technology (ICT) education in all secondary schools.
Professor Akinyeye said, ” the quality of education in present-day Nigeria is insulting and we are not happy about it.
“Most of our young school leavers even with distinction in both English and Mathematics, find it difficult to measure up when they get to the Universities.
“We have to start teaching them the fundamentals of things they should have known from secondary schools. That is why there is a need for a review of our attitudes to education. Most of our schools are not well equipped in terms of infrastructure, staff and teaching aids”.
On ICT teaching, he said, ” If we can catch them young by making all our secondary school students to be computer literate, their lives and fortunes will be changed, because all they required for learning is on the internet”.
“There is the need to promote ICT education at the secondary school level. Everybody must come on board to improve the standard of education particularly at the grassroots. Government alone cannot do it. We need to give back to our society, alma mater no matter how little”.
Chief Osanyinlusi Sunday who delivered the anniversary lecture entitled “Faith of Our Father, Living Still”, charged the alumni not to relent in their support and services to the school.
He told them to make hard work, faith, honesty, courage and respect for others their watchword as they were taught by their pioneer principal, late Chief Olusola Bayode.
“For you to make a difference in your generation, you must step out in boldness and live by faith”.
