Head coach of Nigeria Powerlifting, Feyisetan Are, has declared that the team would capture enough gold medals to put Nigeria in an enviable position in this year’s Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Are spoke yesterday at the National Stadium in Lagos during the handover ceremony of the renovated power gymnasium by Peak Milk.

For more than a decade, the powerlifting team had given Nigerians reasons to smile at major sporting events, even when their able body compatriots failed despite enjoying better facilities and proper funding. From the All African Games to the Commonwealth Games and Paralympics, the powerlifers had won more gold medals and also set world records to the envy of other nations.

Coach Are stated yesterday that the transformation of the National Stadium gym into a world-class facility by peak milk would inspire them to do more for the country at the coming Commonwealth Games.

“Nigerians will see the true meaning of ‘unstoppable’ by the time hostilities begin at the Commonwealth Games,” Are said. “The facilities at the power gym had been in place since 1972, and we had been going through pains training with them. We are very happy peak milk came to our rescue by transferring them into a world-class facility. This will definitely go a long way to enhance our training process and spur us to move to success,” Are stated.

Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung commended Peak Milk saying: “The newly renovated gym, which is now of world-class standard would further inspire athletes, especially our para-powerlifting team to continue to push the limits of excellence by winning more laurels for Nigeria.”

He called on other corporate bodies to emulate FrieslandCampina WAMCO and the peak brand by partnering with government at all levels of sports development in the country.

Managing Director, FrieslandCampina WAMCO, Ben Langat said that the brand took up the challenge to renovate the stadium, to use the story of the paralympians to inspire and motivate other Nigerians.

“We were inspired by the achievement of the paralympians whose willpower, drive and self-motivation to win against all odds have seen them shine despite the obsolete and non-functional gym equipment and facilities they had to use in the past. They have shown that regardless of whatever challenges we face, with determination, we can always reach for our peak.”
