The Federal Government installed frequency monitoring equipment in order to enhance the security of the nation and the Internally Generated Revenue capacity of the country, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Communication, Mr Musa Istifanus, has said.

Istifanus said this at a workshop on 21st Century Satellite/Radio monitoring and spectrum management for IGR and national security in Abuja on Monday.

The equipment which was inaugurated in December 2018 included five state-of-the-art mobile radio monitoring equipment, a National Space Management System, two Denial-of-Service equipment and a National Control Centre.

The project handled by TCI International Incorporated and local partner, LiviaSoft, was approved by the Federal Executive Council in March 2017.

With the equipment, the government is expected to have the capacity and capability to detect, identify and locate the sources of transmissions and is therefore able to determine if a frequency user is duly licensed or not.

The permanent secretary said, “Government approved implementation of the Spectrum Monitoring Project recognising the crucial role it would play in stemming the danger and security challenges posed by irregular and/or illegal use of radio frequency spectrum in the country and the benefits in improving IGR.”

Istifanus listed the objectives of the project to include equipping the ministry with the capability and means of investigating and detecting violations in the use of radio spectrum in Nigeria, reducing incidences of illegal operations and harmful interference by radio frequency users and determining frequency spectrum band and channel occupancy.

Others are to assist in the resolution of electromagnetic spectrum interference and to enhance security of the citizens by providing intelligence to security agencies to increase revenue generation for government. [PUNCH]
