We’re working to make Nigeria’s food products exportable, says Agric Minister

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Mohammad Abubakar has disclosed that the Federal Government is working to bring to an end the problem of Nigerian produce rejection in the international market by introducing organic agriculture practice into the agricultural system.
Abubakar said the Ministry is presently focusing on unlocking the enormous potentials that abound in organic agriculture, as well as its adoption for sustainability of soil nutrients and fertility.

He stated this yesterday in Abuja at the two-day National Dialogue on Organic Agriculture Policy for Nigeria organised by the ministry in collaboration with Ecological Organic Agriculture (EOA) Initiative Nigeria.
The Minister who was Represented by the Director, Federal Department of Land Resources, Shehu Bello said the desire of the government is to sustain the country’s agricultural sector which has picked up as a result of some initiatives of the Ministry which include the provision of zero-interest inputs loans to smallholder farmers.
He noted that the practice of organic agriculture in an organised manner is relatively new in the country, which the Ministry is focusing on to increase agricultural productivity, earn foreign exchange, alleviate poverty, job creation and improve on the rural economies.
He said: “The agricultural sector is one of the key drivers of the economy, and a vibrant agricultural sector is needed to ensure job creation, adequate farm produce to meet the increasing demand for food and raw materials for agribusiness industries.
