The Nigerian Institute for Medical Research commemorated the World Hepatitis Day on the 29th of July 2019 with the theme ‘Find the missing million’.
The event kicked off with a welcome speech by Dr P. Ezeobi from the Institute’s Hepatitis Research group. The Chairman of the occasion, Prof. C. C Onyekwere, a consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) gave the opening remarks.
The Director-General of the Nigerian Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) , Prof. Salako was ably represented by the Acting Head of the Microbiology Department in person of Dr. Igbasi who delivered an address on the subject of the symposium.

Dr. O. Adeleye, a consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) delivered a lecture on the facts about Hepatitis. She started her lecture with a brief overview of Hepatitis and questions to test the attendees’ knowledge on the subject matter. Also she spoke on the different types of Hepatitis; A, B, C, D, E touched on the modes of transmission of each type. This lecture can briefly summarized as practical, insightful and informative.
Following this, Dr. A. P. Okwuraiwe from the Hepatitis Research group at the Institute spoke to the topic Molecular Diagnosis of Hepatitis B Virus and Hepatitis C Virus in Nigeria. During this presentation, he spoke on: Current test technologies, Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), Enzyme immunoassays, Chemo luminescence and Electro chemo luminescence.
After this, questions were fielded by the audience and answered by the respective speakers.
The vote of thanks was given by the Chair of the Organizing committee, Mrs. F. A. Ige.
The symposium ended with the rendition of the second stanza of the Nigerian Anthem.
