Acting Principal of Day Waterman College, Mr. Tunji Abimbola presenting trophies to winners at the School’s Sports Day…at the weekend.
Parents and other sports enthusiasts were at the weekend thrilled by the excellent performances of students of Day Waterman College at their annual inter-house competition, which Yellow House emerged the overall winners with 906 points.
The competition held at the school’s sports complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State, saw Purple House clinching the second position with 777 points, followed by the Red House with 769 points. The fourth position went to Blue House with 740 points, while Green House took the fifth position with 712 points.
The sports day, which is seventh in the series, featured athletics, long and high jumps and sack race, among other events.
Speaking at the event, Acting Principal of the School, Mr. Tunji Abimbola said the competition is aimed at helping the students to develop physically and mentally, as well as encourage them to excel in both academic and sports activities.

“All round development of the students is our priority… we want to produce children and youths who understand the essence of teamwork, and are able to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship in every endeavor of their lives. We are interested in people who are not just brilliant but excellent in other aspects of life like sports, music, arts and several others,” he said.
He described sports as an integral part of the school’s curriculum, adding, “at Day Waterman College we are dedicated to student-centred programmes that promote academic excellence through an enriched, rigorous inter-disciplinary curriculum.”
As a staff, we are here to support all of you, by every means necessary, to ensure you reach your fullest academic potential. Today, we are gathered as a family to showcase ourselves and our school as the centre of excellence”, he reiterated.
He further expressed happiness that students of the school have been doing well in sporting activities.
In his view, the Chairman of the day and Commissioner for Works, Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Ephraim Akparawa Inyang-Eyen described sporting activities as necessary to the development of students, adding that it as a tool to promote discipline and hard work while studying.
“Sports and games are quintessential in the training of children because it teaches to be competitive while imbibing the spirit of sportsmanship and teamwork.” Today is not all about the competition but participation because by participating, we are all winners as life is all about winning and losing”, he said.
Representative of the champions and Captain of the house, Hibatu Umar, an SS2 student attributed the victory to teamwork and harwork.
